Drives are most often separated by their size and this is a big factor in the pricing of a drive. The smallest drives today are around 40GB, you can get a little smaller, but no point really. The largest of 400GB will be enough for a really long time.

The other thing that affects pricing is the rotation speed, which is the speed at which the big disk spins inside the disk drive. The faster it spins the faster information gets found. Look for rotation speeds of 7200RPM as standard and 10000 for the fast end.

With all of this it may be hard to decide, but here are my suggestions.

For a main drive, which has your Windows and programs on it, go for something faster, but bear in mind that even for me my ATA66 drive is fast enough for my uses. But a faster one will speed up how fast your programs go. It might be a good idea just to go for one big, fast drive.

Brand name drives are often worth getting, as manufacturers like Seagate, Maxtor and Western Digital are well known for long lasting quality products, which will not make any difference in the short term usually, but will pay off with long life and reliability.

If you want or need two drives the second one can sacrifice speed for size, as that's what's most often needed for a second drive, which usually stores all your information.

You should now have enough to make a smart choice in your next hard drive purchase. A good one can be kept for a very long time and minimize any hassles in the future.

My computer was running back a bit 'slow ago, so I reset to factory settings. Ensure that no material loss RSMV, I dragged my RSMV folder in my external hard drive to save them. I drove my computer is loaded, and I noticed that my external hard drive is damaged or something. He could notPlay the files on disk, or they use. I thought, and downloaded Fraps, which seemed to help some of the files RSMV. Some are now playable, but still half will remain useless. Within minutes of arriving on the Interop show floor this morning and beginning my search for something cool to videotape for publication here on zdnet, we found Plat' Home's booth in the back of the exhibitor's area with two very cool products — both of them tiny Linux servers, one of which fits in the palm of your hand. One is called the openblocks 266 and the other is the openmicroserver. One of Plat' Home's design principles for both was "no moving parts." As such, neither server has a hard drive in it. Both have a Plat' Home-derived distribution of Linux known as SSD loaded into the on-board memory and, according to Martin Killman who I interviewed in the video, expanding either device to have more "hard drive" space happens in one of two ways. For the openblocks 266, an internal CF card can be added to grow the memory by as much as 8MB. For the openmicroserver (which is actually way larger in dimensions than the openblocks), a CF card cannot be added internally. We live in a new technological age, and many of us purchase a computer and use it for everything, in fact it becomes a very important tool in our daily lives. Hard Drive Failure?

Generally a clicking sound coming from your hard drive is a Bad Omen. It could be a harbinger of horrific hardware happenings, so my immediate advice is "BACKUP YOUR HARD DRIVE!" as soon as possible. If the drive fails, you're out of luck. In fact, even if you don't suspect a problem with your hard drive, it's wise to make regular backups so you can survive a hard drive failure with only minimal inconvenience.

Scan Your Drive

On Windows XP, you can check your hard drive for errors by running the CHKDSK utility. Restart your computer and hold down the Ctrl key while it's booting up. When you see the option to start your system in Safe Mode, select it and continue. Click the Start button, then click Run, then type CHKDSK C: /F /R then press Enter. The /R option tells CHKDSK to scan for bad disk sectors, and the /F option means to fix any errors found. (On a Windows 98 system, use the SCANDISK command instead of CHKDSK.)

If CHKDSK offers to "convert lost chains to files", recover lost data, or fix something else, you should accept. (If CHKDSK tries to sell you a cheap Rolex, politely decline the offer.) After CHKDSK finishes, restart your computer normally and see if the dreaded click of doom returns. If so, the drive is most likely damaged, and should be replaced as soon as possible. Are You On The Level?

But before you trash your troublesome drive, you should try one more thing... Some hard drives are very sensitive to non-level surfaces, and will not function properly if they're sitting on a slant. Shut down your computer, make sure your system unit is on a flat surface (use a level to make sure), and then restart. I was all set to give up on an older computer that was doing the click/whir routine, but I noticed it wasn't sitting on a level surface. As soon as I fixed that, the problem was gone!

That clicking sound MAY signal impending hard drive failure, but keep in mind you don't always get such a warning. So play it safe... back up your files on a regular basis.

Well this question gets asked quite often and it brings with it a lot of arguments and confusion.

So what's the deal?

Well your hard drive is advertised as having a 160GB capacity, but your computer shows only 149.01.

This discrepancy is the result of having two methods of measuring capacity. Computers are binary, or "base two," mathematical systems, and in a binary world a kilobyte is 1024 bytes (2 to the 10th power). When computers were new, the designers referred to this as a "kilo."
